Key messages

  • Alcohol can slow your reflexes and impair your judgement. Drinking large amounts can make you drunk or even lead to alcohol poisoning. Using alcohol is a personal choice and you should consider many factors, such as your age and reasons for using alcohol, before you drink.

  • Drugs can come in many forms, from medications prescribed by your doctor to recreational drugs. While most drugs have risks, recreational drugs can seriously harm you in many ways. You should not use them to fit in, be more active or escape your problems.

  • Cigarette smoking is bad for your health. It is known to cause serious diseases such as cancer, emphysema and heart disease, and can lead to less serious, but still troublesome problems, such as bad breath, yellow teeth and premature wrinkles. It is also an expensive habit. The best way to quit smoking is never to start in the first place. However, if you’d like to quit, there are resources available to help you.

  • A healthy diet is very important to keep your body functioning at its best. Try to regularly eat nutritious foods, following Canada’s Food Guide, and limit the amount of sweets and highly processed foods you eat. Avoid fad diets and set SMART goals to help you maintain a healthy diet.

  • Remember, a healthy weight is not a number! Everyone is unique and your healthy weight range is specific to you. Maintain that healthy weight by eating the right amount of healthy foods and staying active. Ask your healthcare team for help if you need advice.
